LOIS S. KEELER (American, 1904–97)

Lois S. Keeler was born in 1904 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She earned a B.S. degree at Michigan State Normal College and taught for two years in East Detroit. By 1927, she had saved enough money to attend the Art Institute of Chicago from which she graduated in 1931. Her years in Chicago proved to be pivotal as it was there that she met her husband, fellow artist, Harold E. Keeler and where she was first introduced to the stencil method of art-making. Under John Wilkins at the Field Museum, she learned a stencil process using cut paper and graphite dust. In 1931 Harold and Lois Keeler moved to Denver where Lois developed her own pastel stencil technique based on what she had learned. She began to create stencils made of celluloid instead of paper and introduced color to her works in the form of fine powdered pastels. She filled each sheet of celluloid with dozens of shapes and applied the pigment with her own hand-made brushes to meticulously assemble the completed image piece by piece. Later she added accents in pencil and watercolor. It was the beginning of a process she would use - a process that would defy definition - for sixty years. In 1937, Carl Zigrosser of the Weyhe Galleries/NYC was instrumental in Lois Keeler’s progressive success as an artist when he chose Light and Shade from her works exhibited in his gallery for the American Artist Group's Christmas card that year. It was also during their time in Colorado that Lois and Harold Keeler had their first of several joint shows. They exhibited with the Denver Artists Guild at Chappell House (which later became the Denver Art Museum) and later in the Northwest at venues such as the Seattle Art Museum and the Henry Gallery. In 1942 the couple moved to Seattle when Harold was offered a job at Boeing during WWII. As with Colorado, Washington provided a wealth of natural beauty that inspired both artists. Her last show in Olympia, WA in 1989, was a great success and well received. Since her passing in Lacey, WA in 1997, her delicate pastel stencil "poems" have continued to delight.
