Adrienne Sherman, Self Portrait As A Venetian Gentleman with Cara

Recommended by Paige (Collections Manager):
"A rare oil painting in the Davidson Galleries collection, I am charmed by this piece by Adrienne Sherman. It has all of the traditional elements of oil portraits – a posed figure in elegant costuming, rich texture and warmth, fine detail from the hands to the lips. But it is also subversive and cheeky. Many of Sherman's works are inspired by the Italian Renaissance and with this particular work, she inserts herself directly into it. Not only does she paint herself as a Venetian from the era, she paints herself as a gentleman, calling into question the wealth and gender imbalances of the traditional portrait."

Bernhard JagerUntitled (Pregnant Woman)

Recommended by Sam (Gallery Owner & Director):
"Bernhard Jager's Untitled (Pregnant Woman) is a striking color lithograph which reflects the artist's early studies and interest in biology. He makes unique use of liquid tusche for most of his lithographic images. This particular technique and drawing approach allow him to suggest the inner workings of the body while preserving the outline of the form. His paintings and prints are in many museum collections including  the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston."

Kana Nemoto, Dream

Recommended by Nikki (Fine Print Photographer & Content Publisher):
"Nemoto’s etching, Dream gently moves the viewer in and around the underwater scene pictured. This seemingly simple composition weaves a subtle, but complex series of shapes together - created by the organic curves of the fish and underwater plants intersecting with the two rigid rectangles’ borders. This, coupled with the visually grounding linear shapes at the base of each rectangle, build a quiet and engaging daydream for viewers to escape into."

Gordon Mortensen, May Flowers

Recommended by Emma (Marketing & Communications Manager):
"My love for color and my love for poppies are intrinsically intertwined; Mortensen captures both in May Flowers. Orange and blue in particular are my favorite complimentary scheme. These colors make me feel inspired, creative, and energized."
