WINSLOW HOMER (American 1836-1910)
Wood Engravings

When Winslow Homer began producing illustrations for Harper’s Weekly in 1857, the illustrated newspaper was a new arrival on the American scene. Over the next two decades, Homer designed 265 images for illustrated periodicals in Boston and New York. Homer’s wood engravings supplied a rich visual component to the news that doubled as an intimate expression of artistic vision that would be soon supplanted by photography and subsequent forms of mass media. These illustrations, which span Homer’s early career as well as the eventful years of the American Civil War, provide an unparalleled glimpse into the 19th century American experience by one of the nation’s most beloved artists.
