Description: Inspired by the revolutionary leader of the 1525 German peasant revolt, “Black Anna,” Kollwitz began the Peasants’ War series and broke with tradition by telling most of the story from the viewpoint of the women involved. In this revolt against the compulsory labor and crippling taxes enforced on the peasantry, Kollwotz found a parallel with the plight of the contemporary working class then in Germany. Sharpening the Scythe shows the female revolutionary in preparation. She sits fierce and resolute, peering menacingly and powerfully over her scythe as she hones the blade’s edge to deadly sharpness.
