Sven Birger Sandzen was born in Bildsberg, Sweden and studied at College of Skara and University of Lund. He was a pupil of Anders Zorn and studied at the Artists' League of Stockholm and later with Aman-Jean in Paris. In 1894 he emigrated to Lindsborg, Kansas where he was professor at Bethany College till 1945. He was a regular visitor to Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico where he exhibited with the Taos Society of Artists. Sandzen founded the Prairie Printmakers Society and during the Depression was a W.P.A. artist. He was well known for his paintings and prints devoted to the landscapes he loved.
