A native of Kyoto, Teruhide Kato was a major contemporary kimono designer in Japan in the 1960s and 1970s. He studied at the Kyoto Art College and began his professional design career as a part of the flourishing post-war art scene in Kyoto. He quickly developed a following for his fashionable kimono designs that balanced tradition with a modern Japanese design aesthetic.
In the mid-1980s, Kato ended his career in the kimono field and turned to his first artistic love: the traditional arts of painting and woodblock printmaking. He concentrated on landscape scenery from his beloved hometown of Kyoto. Rich with architectural and natural beauty, Kato’s striking images capture the quiet magic of this beautiful city.
