"Jonelle Johnson uses thinned oil-based ink to layer transparent veils of color and brushstrokes to produce a sense of physical depth and movement in her vibrant monotypes. A great example of this is her piece aptly titled Cosmic Birds. The dynamic texture created by layers of contrasting colors and swirling lines captures the birds' frenetic movements so effectively, viewing the piece ignites a near-synesthetic experience. It feels like the birds are about to jump off the paper and I can hear the cacophony of their calls (which I enjoy as a bird lover). The relatively mellow and cool-toned color palette has a balancing quality which keeps the experience from being too jarring."

"Mary Farrell's etchings have an amazing precision and texture that make her imagery so visceral. In Identity, Farrell uses harsh contrast to cover the figure's shoulders and neck in highlights but shroud their face in shadows. I find so much mystery in the figure - the lack of context encourages anonymity but the face seems so specific, the pose is generic but hostile or at least uninviting, a cold but honest portrait. The title further mystifies me as I wonder how well I know this person from Farrell's image, or what really makes up an identity."

"Mary Farrell is known for her strong and charismatic sketch-like images of hands. In contrast, her etching, “Fragile Security” depicts a grim and delicate bird skeleton, all the parts jumbled but undisturbed, the skull still pristine.  The rot and feathers are accompanied by a broken twig with leaves still attached. In the same way that her etchings breathe life and movement into the paper, “Fragile Security” is an end to breath, stillness, rustling in the wind and slowly turning to dust. "Christie Tirado, a contemporary artist and daughter of Mexican immigrant parents,  brings a number of traditional Mexican heritage hallmarks to her contemporary screenprint. In ‘La Catrina’, Tirado elegantly combines hand-mixed colors that make the much larger than life Lotería card pop. She also carefully references a Día de los Muertos icon, while also giving a nod to the original creator and printmaker, José Posada, who created la Catrina as a dig on the wealthy upper class of Mexico. Lotería is popular all across Mexico today, but was initially brought to Mexico by Spanish colonizers and mostly played by the elite class. By combining a popular icon with a popular game, Tirado has crafted a stunning image that pulls from deep historical roots."

"Edmund Blampied’s masterful drypoint “Below Stairs” shows a wonderful familiarity between a chef and a maid in a British household.  The somewhat unkempt chef stands with his hands in his pockets and a cigarette hanging from his mouth as the maid listens intently, leaning on a broom. Between their feet stands a kitty asking politely for attention. The warmth of the drypoint adds to the overall mood of this vignette. Printed in the 1930’s, this image pays homage to the end of the era of upstairs-downstairs dynamics in the late aristocracy and wealthy family households."

Mazatl, translated to ‘deer’, is a day in the Aztec calendar that is a good day to hunt and a bad day to be hunted. This contemporary artist uses woodcut and relief printmaking to advocate for environmental, political, and social justice. The level of detail Mazatl is able to achieve on this linocut print is incredible. He works every available surface with tiny cuts that delineate curves of spines, underwater flower petals, and hollow eye sockets. The mirrored image of the seahorse both alive and dead is attractive with its perfectly split composition and inverse imagery. This nearly two foot long print stares its viewer down, challenging them to think about extinction and its consequences, while simultaneously providing beautiful aesthetics.

'Magnetismo' is a beautiful combination of fluidity and stability. The sky and sand are handled loosely to create a wild texture in the background while the foreground is much sharper with the firm lines of the woman, her hair and the bull. I am drawn to Mendez's work for his interest in Mexican magical realism and his emphasis of the woman as an active, powerful force. I always return to Mendez and find yet another reason why he is one of my favorite Mexican artists.

I love Ben Beres' marbled monoprints and the vibrant texture of this piece makes it an easy favorite of mine. Beyond the beautiful color palette, Beres' bold display of a word associated with quiet loneliness is compelling (and rather ironic) and represents the complexities of human emotions. We may feel isolated, whether by choice or otherwise, while simultaneously yearning to be seen and understood. The large text and brilliant colors are impossible to ignore, igniting an almost synesthetic call for attention and connection.

Ivan Rusachek’s dreamlike etchings deliver the viewer into a liminal world. In “Full Moon - 100 Years of Solitude,” he references the magic realist masterpiece of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The woman depicted in this etching looks right into the viewer, much the way characters from Marquez’s novel see through time and even their own narrative. The symbol of the moon is at once a window into into the world and a shield from it. Rusachek’s interpretation of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” exemplify his ability to translate the essence of ephemeral stories that touch the heart of humanity, conveying meaning while retaining complex mystery.

"Mariko Ando's illustrative prints convey a feeling of childlike whimsy, but there is also an air of seriousness from the expressions of her subjects. In this piece, two rabbits are protectively watching over a caged rose on a tumultuous sea journey. Ando's use of color and texture adds so much to the story -- the juxtaposition of the striking colors of the rose and the rabbits' outfits against the hazy sky and the deep, rolling waves highlights the importance of the rabbits' mission to safeguard their precious rose. Artist's statement:
"Backyard at Night is part of the series Night Shadows, inspired by late night walks through my Minneapolis neighborhood. The work addresses feelings of isolation brought on by the pandemic.

The prints were made by painting with black watercolor on a thin polyester plate, which was then printed on a press. Unlike oil monotypes, the image must be completely dry before being printed. This means that it can be developed over many hours, even days. I use additive and subtractive processes to make the images, putting down washes and marks that are allowed to dry before being lifted and revised by re-wetting the plate."

"Starfish are symbolic of divine and endless love. These celestial beings sweep the background of Asahi’s highly technical etching. The little blue-eyed starfish serve as helpful and loving guides as the central female figure pours out the ocean from a shell as she sits on the back of a flying dragon. There is an energy to the piece, despite the artist including only tiny pops of color in the eyes and small details of each creature. Instead, linework and shape build the composition’s movement and playfulness. Each line etched into the plate is carefully scratched to give swirling loops to the water, striking contrast to the dragon scales, and delicate curves on the woman’s body. A visual boost of warm and energetic feelings."

"The Contemporary Chinese artist Li Shuang (the only female member of the Xingxing group 'Stars' which served as the vanguard of modern Chinese art)  was born in Beijing in 1957 into a family of intellectuals who came to feel the full weight of Mao Zedong's suspicion and persecution for writings and images conflicting with the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).  After two years in prison (1981-1983) she left China for Europe.  This wonderful collage from the 1980s makes no specific political reference.  The patterned pieces of implied fabric reinforce the action of the three figures."

"Callot's rendering of this annual fair near Florence is a masterpiece.  It employs two major contributions the artist made to printmaking.  His introductory use of lute varnish for the protective coating (ground) put on the copper plate before the image mark making.  This material allowed more fine detail and less fowl bite (unintended marks on the plate surface) due to this secure and uniform plate coating.  The artist selectively exposes the plate surface, prior to its submersion in the acid bath for the acid to selectively act on the copper to generate the lines destined to make up the image.  The clean and delicate lines made possible with his discovery, combined with his unique, simplified, gestural drawing technique, allowed for the complexity of this amazing image."

"The level of technical detail in this etching is intricate - from each character’s particular facial expression to the curtains, hanging plants, mirror, and archway tile designs. Takeda is so good at taking simple everyday things like drinking coffee at a coffee shop and turning them into interesting shadow box scenes. The viewer can’t help but look at each of the people in this crowded room and wonder what they are all thinking behind their wide eyes. The only character not looking at one another or at themselves in the mirror is the person directly in front of the viewer. "A rare oil painting in the Davidson Galleries collection, I am charmed by this piece by Adrienne Sherman. It has all of the traditional elements of oil portraits – a posed figure in elegant costuming, rich texture and warmth, fine detail from the hands to the lips. But it is also subversive and cheeky. Many of Sherman's works are inspired by the Italian Renaissance and with this particular work, she inserts herself directly into it. "This piece comes from Carrie Lingscheit's twenty thousand moments project, based on the limitations of our human brains and the amount of information that can be processed and saved from the 20,000 (or so) moments in a given day. Momento No. 3273 (pine) hones in on a feeling, to pine, and the quiet setting where it happens, alone in a bed. It beautifully captures the way we are drawn inward to our own emotions and imagination when we pine for someone or something. Negative space is used to draw our attention down to the dark, intense face; the surroundings are blurred and forgotten, represented only with a lovely watercolor texture, just as we tune out the world when lost in intense thought."

Takeda's use of the etching and aquatint process, is perfect for the detail required."

"This wood engraving by Leonard Baskin shows his sense of humor, perhaps his lesser known side. It exemplifies the idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The dog is not objectively beautiful, but the artist/owner declares that it is. You see the expressive quality in Baskin's wood engravings, from the fur textures in the bulky body to the shape of the dainty paws. Baskin is so assertive in declaring he and his dog are a package deal; to love one is to love the other."

Asahi uses her signature color palette to create a softness that’s pleasing to look at with tiny pops of color that also serve to direct the viewer’s eye. Each character depicted is given importance and movement - even the buildings seem to be enjoying themselves, tucked between the jumping fish and waves of the water."

"Oleksiy Fedorenko creates wildly enigmatic etchings, and I treasure them all. His works are full of absurdity, whimsicality and subtlety, and yet are so clear - exactly as he describes them. In Person with Bell, there is certainly a person and a bell, but the title is comically reductive. He even writes the title in lovely script in the plate. But he fails to mention that the person seems to have four eyes, there is also a person with towering hair, small castles in space, and floating, glowing microbes or generally unidentified squiggles. It's human yet fantastical and otherworldly. I haven't the slightest about when or where this scene is from, but I'm captivated."
