Ryohei Tanaka (Japanese, 1933 - 2019) is internationally known for his exceedingly fine etchings of rural Japan. He creates rich surfaces that juxtapose various subtle yet distinct textures. Leaves, thatch, wood, tile, stone, snow, and water come together to create astonishingly tactile and sensual images. Tanaka’s aesthetic sensibility is an equally important element in his work. He playfully uses visual dissonance to generate renewed interest, causing viewers to reappraise what originally seems to be exquisitely rendered but quotidian imagery. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and others.
