Karin Székessy is a German artist known for her black-and-white nude and fashion photography. Characterized by the play of light and transparency across abstracted figures, Székessy’s work explores a distinctly female eroticism. This sensibility is exemplified in her series Selected female nudes (11 works) from 1970–1979, in which nude female figures are draped in sheer cloth and illuminated by singular light sources. Born April 17, 1938 in Essen, Germany, she studied photography in Munich at the Institute for Photojournalism, and worked until 1966 as a photographer for Kristall magazine. In 1963, she began a collaborative work of nude photography with Paul Wunderlich, whom she married in 1971. From 1967 to 1969, Székessy taught fashion photography at the School of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg, and would work as a freelance photographer thereafter. Her husband was a painter and sculptor, and the two collaborated on work until his death in 2010. Székessy lives and works in Hamburg, Germany and the South of France.
