Thomas Schofield Handforth was an American artist and etcher. He was born in Tacoma, Washington and attended the University of Washington and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in France. Handforth traveled extensively and in the 1930s took up residence in Peking, China. While preparing the illustrations for his book Mei Li he spent a good part of every day sketching life in the city. In addition to his impromptu observations, Handforth invited sword dancers, contortionists, jugglers, puppeteers, minstrels and acrobats into his studio to pose for him. These limited edition lithographs of wrestlers are a result of this vibrant and colorful experience.
