Description: A sense of autumnal isolation and hardship is remarkably conveyed by the pose, the shabbiness of the broken basket in the lower right, and the anxiety with which the Chinese servants are gulping their hot soup. The leaves on the trees are not the usual decorative patterns, but insect-riddled left overs about the fall from the twigs. The image reflects Jacoulet's feelings of loneliness and frustration more poignantly than any of his letters.
