Description: Cuevas was an active proponent in figurative art and self-expression, especially as that related to the contemporary human condition. Like his influences Posada and Goya, Cuevas was drawn to themes of degraded humanity as a form of social commentary. In the brothel he depicts here, the central prostitute is unidealized, yet beautiful and bittersweet in it’s form and expression of tragic humanity. She is no seductress and even seems a little bored as she waits for her next customer.
