John Grade (American, b. 1970) was born in Minneapolis and lives and works in Seattle. He received a BFA from the Pratt Institute. Grade has created major installations internationally including Wawona in MOHAI, Seattle; Middle Fork in the Seattle Art Museum; Isla at Kew Gardens, UK; and Reservoir at Arte Sella Sculpture Park, Italy. Grade is known for his immersive large-scale, site-specific installations, produced with his studio team and installed everywhere from embassies and museums to forests and channels. Inspired by changing ecosystems, Grade researches natural phenomena around the world to create works that explore the natural motions and conditions of its installation site and the referenced remote locations. His works produce interventions in a space or environment that draw the attention of viewers but with the utmost care to avoid disturbances to its natural hosts. His small-scale sculptures and works on paper often investigate alternative directions for or intimate details within his larger works. Grade is the recipient of many awards, including the 2010 Metcalf Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, three Andy Warhol Foundation Grant Awards, the 2011 Arlene Schnitzer Prize from the Portland Art Museum, and the 2013 Arts Innovator Award from Artist Trust.
