Sosaku Hanga

Modern Japanese Printmaking

Sosaku Hanga, or “Creative Printing,” was an important 20th century movement in Japanese printmaking. Sosaku Hanga artists explored a broad range of artistic possibilities with their imaginative and unorthodox use of color, subject matter, and printing methods. Instead of relying on the collaborative artist-publisher process that had defined Japanese woodblock printing for centuries, Sosaku Hanga artists took control of every aspect of production - drawing, cutting, and printing their blocks to independently realize their creative visions.
