PERSONAL NARRATIVES

This is an exhibition archive. Please visit our department homepage for current and available works by the artists.

Personal Narratives explores different ways to suggest the elements of a story in a single image. The presence or purposeful neglect of a figure turns any setting or the associated objects into the context for a particular scenario. The object and figures vary as does the atmosphere and palette, but each contributes significantly to our “understanding.”

Kate Samworth uses indirect references and dramatic lighting to set the stage. David Kane employs contrary scales and stylized handling of limited details to maintain the focus on key elements. With T. Michael Gardiner’s images the viewer is required to sort through a multitude of objects to piece together one or more intended meanings. The Biblical figures enlisted by Lisa Sweet often bring with them a whole new group of attributes and associations. Often aided by a supporting cast of animals, Rich Lehl makes images that, often humorously, challenge accepted interpretations and allow us to see ourselves or others differently. A Rorschach blob becomes the “seed” for a fully fantasized scene by David Stein. Milo Duke finds inspiration in historical figures.

Each artist seeks to free our imaginations to create our own stories within their personal narrative.
