OUTLOOK – A Group Landscape Show

Gallery Exhibition: August 5-27, 2011

Featuring Sieman Dijkstra, Jean Gumpper, Jonelle Johnson, Jennifer Worsley and Mandrake Waltham Mantle

OUTLOOK features artists who each present very different approaches to landscape subjects on paper. Dutch artist Siemen Dijkstra's finely cut reduction woodcuts make familiar outlooks interesting. His colors and even more his particular cutting technique, add unique and consistently personal descriptive qualities. Another reduction woodcut artist, Jean Gumpper, takes a closer view of landscape to find a world of subjects at the edges of Colorado rivers and lakes. The images are both abstract and particular, depending upon your proximity. Washington artist Jonelle Johnson has recently turned to monotypes to bring new freedom to her rendering of the landscape. As with the other three, Utah woodcut artist, Jennifer Worsley prefers the paper surface for multiple block woodcuts to represent the dramatic interplay of clouds and sky. Worsley exploits the soft, atmospheric quality possible from color printed from woodblocks, in a way that stands in marked contrast to Dijkstra's crisp inking and clearly distinguished color combinations, when they handle related subjects.
