Introductions 2006 features the work of five artists new to Davidson Galleries. These artists come from all over the United States and work in a variety of mediums.
Michael Barnes, Illinois, studied printmkaing at the University of Iowa and is now Associate Professor, Head of Printmaking at Northern Illinois University.His lithographs are from his most recent series featuring strange hybrid creatures he calls The New Breed. This series addresses the human desire to control and possess.
California artist Eunice Kim works primarily with collagraphy, a direct and tactile process in which materials and textures are adhered to a plate surface that is then inked and printed with an intaglio press. These images of grids and circles explore the play and tension between order and chaos. Kim feels “motivated by a need and desire to not only observe the dynamic between order and chaos but to affect it.”
Matthew Gombert, from Tennessee, uses tiny rubber stamps to construct large, 30” x 22”, close up portraits. Woodcuts by Washington native Chris Papa explore the intersection of and the tension between abstract and representational imagery. Papa utilizes the graphic strength and clarity inherent in the woodcut medium. Oregon artist Barbara Mason creates evocative, abstract, black and white images with the soloar-plate etching process.
All five artist make effective use of their chosen mediums for compelling imagery.
