German Prints

In the first quarter of the 20th century, Germany was overflowing with revolutionary ideas and practices in the arts. Influenced by Primitivism, the Symbolists, and the ideas of Nietzsche,  the German Expressionists sought to communicate a broad range of human emotions through the bold, graphic use of traditional print processes. Although they addressed a number of subjects using a variety of techniques, it is their powerful and intensely psychological portraits--often in the form of woodcuts - for which the Expressionists are most often celebrated. Davidson Galleries maintains a diverse inventory of works by the German Expressionists as well as the earlier artists from whom they drew inspiration.
