A Group Drawing Show

Gallery Exhibition: October 7-29, 2011

On October 6, 2011 Davidson Galleries will present BLURRING THE LINES, an exhibition curated to illustrate the vast scope of drawing techniques, materials and subjects from the mid 20th to the 21st century and how the boundaries that define the medium are continually blurred by the implementation of new materials and surfaces.

Highlights include a mid-twentieth century pencil and wash drawing by Don Freeman, a social narrative entitled Squad Room. In contrast is Leonard Baskin’s stark, figurative pen and ink drawing Determined Figure from 1977. One-time Paul Cadmus student, Michael Bergt, delivers his erotically charged iconic images in gouache and colored pencil alongside a series of classically inspired works on carved gold leafed panels. Melissa Cooke’s hyper-realist, intimately disconcerting self-portraits in graphite “investigate the latent darkness and sexuality inside all of us.” Pushing boundaries of the medium even further are Trish Maharam and Jason Walker. Drawn with thread on cream and silver silk, Maharam stitches abstract meditations on her sister’s scare with cancer. Jason Walker’s quirky, ceramic animatrons embellished with cityscapes take drawing into the third dimension.
