Maps & Views of Western Washington

Available Works

In addition to the useful physical data they are designed to provide, maps and views are rich and subtle indicators of the scientific, social, and aesthetic attitudes specific to a time and place. When viewed together in a group, these historical artifacts become a chronological testimony of exploration, economics, and politics in a changing world. As one of the last areas of the North American continent to be explored and settled by the descendants of Europeans, the Pacific Northwest--particularly the region immediately surrounding the system of glacial fjords collectively known as the Puget Sound--has a rich and explosive history of exploration, settlement, and development during the 19th and 20th centuries. By recording these changes in engraved plates and lithographic stones, the cartographers, printers, and publishers who have mapped Western Washington have preserved a fascinating visual record of the geology and history of our region.

Presented in support of the gallery’s partnership with The Alliance for Puget Sound Shorelines.
