Arturo García Bustos and Rina Lazo: Sixty Years of Political Printmaking in Mexico

Tacoma, WASixty Years of Political Printmaking in Mexico presents the politically and socially dynamic works of partners Arturo García Bustos and Rina Lazo while highlighting the technical breadth of their printmaking. Art and politics are intertwined from the outset as the show is centered around portraits of political and artistic icons, including Benito Juárez, Emiliano Zapata, Fidel Castro, Frida Kahlo, and Diego Rivera. Bustos and Lazo have been vital to the political art scene in Mexico since they first met and married in the late 1940s. Bustos was a disciple of Frida Kahlo in the decade before her death in 1954, and Lazo was the primary assistant of Frida’s husband, Diego Rivera, in the decade before his death in 1957. The couple have been centrally involved in the Taller de Gráfica Popular (Popular Graphic Workshop).

The exhibition will present images treating political struggles on one side of the gallery and Mexican identity on the other side of the gallery.  The two themes progress until they meet on either side of the exhibition entrance.  This structure underscores the formative artistic and political genealogy of the artists, whose graphic work has reflected and shaped Mexican cultural and political identity during those 60 years.

Form and Space at SAM TASTE

form and space image

SAM Gallery presents Form and Space, an exhibit of mixed media works at TASTE Restaurant by two Davidson artists, Barbara Robertson and Amanda Knowles.

Barbara Robertson and Amanda Knowles work with the ephemera of science. As artists, they express the content in different ways: Robertson uses ideas related to space, motion and light, inspired by current scientific inquiry in the fields of physics, astronomy and biology; Knowles is interested in structure, and her practice expresses a way of thinking and composing related to math, physics and engineering.

Both artists create intricate systems of visual information whose roots touch the original idea but which spin-off quickly into a personal poetic abstraction.

The exhibition kicks off with an opening reception on Tuesday, March 17th from 5-6pm (space is limited, please RSVP to 206 903.5291 or tasterestaurant@tastesam.com), and continues through June 14th.

SAM TASTE is located at 1300 First Ave in Downtown Seattle.

Six of the works in the SMS portfolios are sound pieces.  These include phonograph records by Marcel Duchamp, Bernar Venet, and Diane Wakowski, as well as tape pieces by Terry Riley, La Monte Young and Bruce Nauman.  Davidson Galleries is partnering with local experimental music store Dissonant Plane to present a full program of all six audio pieces.

The event will be hosted by Eric Lanzillotta of Dissonant Plane and presented by Emily Pothast of Davidson Galleries.  It will begin at 7 pm sharp on Friday, February 20 at Resolution Audio, downstairs from Dissonant Plane in Ballard, and will last approximately three hours.
