Liza vonRosenstiel

Circular Devotion

December 7, 2007 - February 2, 2008

"My paintings are inspired by a myriad of situations: daily life, stories from the radio, politics, travel, weather and books. The exotic and mundane are the grist for my paintings which are stories or modern parables, where the viewer can choose the outcome." In this exhibition of new work, Liza vonRosenstiel exhibits traditional frescoes alongside her oils on panel. While there is a thematic consistency between the two mediums, the methods yield contrasting results: her oil paintings feel decidedly modern, consisting of bold, saturated colors, smooth surfaces, and clean edges without frames; the frescoes, painted on wet plaster, utilize flat, textured surfaces, muted colors, and shaped panels (mimicking icons) to evoke venerable objects from an indeterminate past.
