Seiko Tachibana
Origin Connection
February 8 - March 1, 2008
In her intaglio prints, Seiko Tachibana creates soft, translucent layers of color and delicate lines using various techniques such as etching, aquatint and spit bite. For her new series of prints, titled Origin - Connection, Tachibana began by exploring the reason and meaning of the lines, dots and other elements that comprise her artwork. Consciously and subconsciously these elements are informed and inspired by her memories and experiences of everyday life. Her art becomes her history and stands as a testament to her existence.
The concept that many small pieces come together to make up a larger whole is a central theme in her artwork. She see the marks, lines, shapes, colors and textures that are the basic language of her work as analogous to the cells of an organism. The plant forms in her new work are symbols of the way life, like art, is made from small singular pieces that together create something more. Tachibana explores the connections between the building blocks and the whole, and at a greater level, the connections between each of us and the world in which we live.
Seiko Tachibana (b. 1964) moved from her home in Japan to San Francisco where she completed her M.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1995. This is her second exhibition at Davidson Galleries. Her work can be found in many public and corporate collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.
