FRANCESCA SUNDSTEN

Animal/human hybrids, surreal bucolic landscapes, giants, and larva-riddled fruit are but a few of the subjects depicted in Francesca Sundsten’s most recent paintings. In this exhibition, Sundsten continues to provoke the viewer with her enigmatic images which range from the bizarre to the mystical.

Sundsten creates timeless worlds inspired by ancient myths and symbols intertwined with modern culture and science. Her hybrid creatures at once evoke Homeric legends that never existed and yet seem quite topical in a world of cross-species gene manipulation.

Of her art, Sundsten states, “I try not to make my work too specific or to display my intentions too didactically. The nature of a painting is its passivity and its ability to resonate silently through time. The skin of a piece is composed by craft as a lure - the substance lurks more quietly. I hope the viewer will find various levels on which to interpret the work: esthetically, narratively, metaphorically, personally.”
