John Sloan (American, 1871-1951)

Etchings

A leading figure in the Ashcan School of American Realism, John French Sloan (1871-1951) is one of the most influential artists and art educators of the 20th century. A member of the Socialist Party, Sloan favored gritty, urban subjects that spotlighted the working class and occasionally lampooned the excesses of the aristocratic elite. He was, however, averse to the notion of painting propaganda and insisted that his city life scenes were inspired not by any political agenda but by the "bits of joy in human life" he saw reflected in his subjects. A participant in the Armory Show and mentor of artists Raphael Soyer, Reginald Marsh and Peggy Bacon, Sloan had an immeasurable impact on the artistic identity of New York City. The Antique Print Department is proud to present an exhibition of selected etchings by John Sloan during the month of November.
