JENNY SCHMID

Jenny Schmid humorously explores dichotomies within gender and art. Schmid utilizes compositional hierarchies to structure a narrative around a central dominant figure. In each image, this character finds itself pinned between opposing forces of good and evil, love and lust, the contemporary and the historic. Like the glazing used in traditional oil painting, Schmid generates her monotype images by building up thin layers of translucent ink printed through multiple passes on a lithography press. In contrast to the monotypes, Schmid laboriously creates mezzotint images that ironically hark back to early mezzotint portraiture. Her contemporary imagery creates a refreshing contrast to the traditional media. Schmid’s social commentary, veiled heavily with wit, adds a new twist to the long tradition of satirical prints.
