Selene Santucci

Selene Santucci continually reworks her paintings with her keen sense of intuition, deciding where to add or subtract lines, objects, or patches of color. Despite this frenzy of activity, her paintings appear calm and cerebral: controlled chaos. At first glance these are abstract, formal investigations of color and composition; however, a closer look reveals diminutive objects and figures in the nooks and crannies of her interlocking forms. With these literal references she is purposely constructing ambiguous narratives, leaving room for interpretation.

Of her paintings, Santucci states, "It is an exhausting process, but it keeps a forward moving momentum to my work, which is something that I deem absolutely necessary as an artist. I abhor the thought of making the same painting over and over with only slight changes... My paintings come from memory, imagination, and many false starts. I feel that my work and my way of painting have an affinity with some aspects of Surrealism and 'psychic automatism', and could be considered figuratively abstract."
