added. The city of Suez before the building of the canal.
The faint rainbow above the city is true to the original
color scheme, and added by hand.

Original lithographic colors. The accompanying text speculates on the effect the construction of a canal connecting the Mediterranean and the Red Sea might have on the City. The construction of the Suez Canal began ten years after Roberts’ journey.

temple encountered by Roberts in the midst of the
Sinai desert, on the summit of a small mountain.

159. Arabs of the Desert.

colors. One of the few individual character studies
in the series. The figure is Besharah, a Beni-Said
tribesman who accompanied Roberts on this portion
of his journey.
