Kalabshee is another of the sites now submerged

the temple was dismantled and moved 25 miles
further south to New Kalabshee.

fine lithography. This temple was given by Egypt to
the United States as a gift for assistance in rescuing
the Nile monuments from Lake Nasser, and is now
reconstructed in a special room of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York.

stood guard over the traffic along the Nile. It was
entirely submerged by the waters of Lake Nasser,
giving some idea of the height to which these waters
rose behind the Aswan Dam.

date of Nov. 14, 1836, obviously an error by the
lithographers, as Roberts did not begin his journey

Original lithographic colors. This temple, like many
others, was still unfinished at the time it was converted
to a church during the spread of early Christianity in
Nubia. At the time of Roberts’ visit it had been badly
damaged by earthquakes but was still standing. It was
later reconstructed above Lake Nasser.

of Ramses II at the temple entrance (one fallen

staff is the symbol of Amun-Ra, a ram’s head

124. The Sanctuary of the Great Temple
of Aboo Simbel, Nubia.

Original lithographic colors. This quartet of dieties,
including Ramses II as a god, is carved into the rock
some 125 feet into the hillside. It is situated such that
it is illuminated by the rising sun at the solstices. When
relocated above Lake Nasser following the building of
the Aswan High Dam, the temple was reconstructed
so as to preserve this phenomenon.
