Allan Packer elegantly utilizes a multitude of mediums while exemplifying his conceptual rigor. His creative drive and expertise is exemplified in large-scale undertakings yet correspondingly he conveys his understanding of intimate encounters with smaller endeavors. In this show, the artist works with an array of ideas evolving from nature, Inuit culture, and mathematics.
Packer became fascinated by elemental nature and Inuit culture during a residency in Cape Dorset in the 1980s. Of this residency, Packer states: “The unforgiving climate and rugged geography showed me a side of nature vital to my work in spirit and respect. From this vantage point, 64°n14' – 76°w32' I saw a different perspective of life on our planet. The spirit and magic of the Inuit culture forever weaves through my work.”
As the artist became more knowledgeable of the Inuit artists and their practices, Packer became inspired and developed his own symbolic language. In Corvus Corax, which was created at the Banff Centre in Canada, the artist addresses the cultural and political impact of this encounter.
