Brian Novatny
Available Works
Brian Novatny's paintings are comprised of highly sophisticated assembled images of figures, patterns, and surface, a technique central to his work for the past three years. This show highlights the artist's newest endeavors marked by subtle tones of emotion, interaction amongst his drawn figures, and a heightened level of complexity found within each composition.
Novatny's paintings include several frozen moments, which create a story when viewed as a whole. However, each narrative is non-linear, due to interruptions of brilliant color, ornate patterns and billowing clouds of brush strokes. The overlapping color and texture create beautifully composed moments of intersection. The flatly-painted figures are detached from their environs conveying banal yet mysterious moments of staged interaction. Novatny mixes mediums of oil, collage, and watercolor on his panels and subtly infuses the works with art historical references enhanced by his talented draughtsmanship.
