Davidson Galleries is proud to introduce a small survey of the famous German painter and etcher, Friedrich Meckseper (Born in 1936). Although the artist is very well known in Europe his work has had more limited exposure in this country. During the 1970s his beautiful still life images were frequently included with the “fantastic realists” (Wunderlich, Eggers, Botger, Hausner, Fuchs, and others working in Germany and Austria). He shared their masterly technique but stood apart for his focus on still life and a tendency to find geometry even in landscape. The careful, sometimes surreal compositions combine tools of measurement, monumental manipulations of scale, diagrammatic plottings, meticulous mark making and a magic, airless space created with clouds and shadows.
Meckseper has had more than 100 solo exhibitions, thirty in museums in Europe and Japan. He counts the work of Morandi, Bissier and Heyboer as important influences.
