Clare Leighton (British/American, 1898-1989)

Clare Leighton (British/American, 1898 - 1989) was born in London and attended the Slade School of Fine Art. She began as a painter, but soon after leaving Slade was introduced to wood engraving, the medium that would be her primary means of expression for the rest of her career. Leighton traveled extensively and found that throughout these different locales, she felt the strongest affinity with the rural worker. In her works they are humble, yet gifted and whether stomping grapes or washing clothes, each trade becomes its own form of art. The simple, honest lines of her engravings reflect the character of the workers. By idealizing the worker in this way, Leighton combined politics with aestheticism. In the years leading up to the second World War, Leighton wrote and illustrated a number of books from her home Four Hedges in Monks Risborough: The Farmer’s Year (1933) a chronicle through twelve months of life on the land; Four Hedges (1935) a personal account of a year in the garden of her own home; and Country Matters (1937) a celebration of English rural life. In 1939 she moved to the United States and exectued several commissions for illustrations before turning to stained glass compositions toward the end of her life.
