Miki Lee
Available Works
As with her large canvases, Miki Lee’s works on paper start out with hand-drawn lines, winding vertical stripes which are then meticulously painted without the use of masking, one small brushstroke at a time. The difference here is scale; these 22 by 30 inch works are much more intimate and sensuous compared to the forceful and dizzying presence of the canvases. The dynamic between formal strength and playfulness nearly eclipse the meditative nature of Lee’s paintings manifested in the nearly obsessive attention to detail and hours invested in their creation. In the 40 or so bands painted in each of these works (70 to 100 in her canvases), no two colors are alike. Yet despite her intense focus, Lee’s paintings appear bold and freespirited. In her newest paintings Lee adds a twist: she has added hard-edged black passages which appear as voids or impediments, disrupting the undulating flow.
