Käthe Kollwitz (German 1867-1945)
Available Works
As an accomplished draughtswoman, Kollwitz's expressive lines in etching and lithography illustrate evocative images of figures surviving in a period of cataclysmic political and social upheaval. Kollwitz's streamlined compositions, void of color and detail, communicate her pacifist message and the heartache of human suffering. Included in the exhibition will be several artist self-portraits, a theme which Kollwitz returned to many times throughout her life as she explored the process of her own aging.
Kollwitz's success as a print artist lead her to unprecedented advances as a female working in a male dominated profession. She was the first woman to be admitted to, and appointed professor, at the Berlin Academy of Art. Her work has been widely collected by museums world wide from early in her career. Respected for her technical abilities, universal images of social consciousness, and emotional intensity, Kollwitz's prints continue to be collected by museums and individuals. Kollwitz remains one of the most sought-after early modern print artists at Davidson Galleries.
Signed, lifetime impressions, as well as desirable unsigned, posthumous original prints are available.
