Kaoru Kawano (Japanese, 1916-1965)
Kaoru Kawano was a woodblock printmaker active from mid-1940s to the early 1960s. He was a student at the Kawabata Art School and because his early works showed such great promise, they were displayed at the Nihon Hanga Kyokai Exhibition (Japan Print Society) in 1944. He moved to Tokyo in 1958, and participated in several international competitions and solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle and Chicago. Although Kawano carved many different subjects, he is best known for his representations of children. As a sosaku hanga artist, he not only designed his woodcuts but also carved the blocks and printed his own impressions. Although his blocks are expressively carved, often making aesthetic use of the existing wood grain, his images are nonetheless gentle and reflective.
