WENCESLAUS HOLLAR
(Bohemian 1607-1677)

The skillful and prolific work of Wenceslaus Hollar wonderfully reflects many aspects of 17th century daily life in Europe.  Ranging from city views and seascapes; women's dress and animals; and detailed portraiture, Hollar's prints are an important record of this era in history. Hollar worked at the height of printmaking and was one of the great masters of etching and engraving.  Technically his prints are far superior to those of his contemporaries. Hollar's Dance of Death series are designs after the prints of Hans Holbein (1497-1543).
