William Hogarth (English, 1697-1764)

Available Works

The most important and well-known English artist of the 18th century was without a doubt William Hogarth. Hogarth’s careful observations of the emotions, actions, and characters of 18th century English middle class life are revealed through his masterful engravings which were produced as copies of his paintings as a means of profit for the artist. Hogarth’s ability to identify and accurately illustrate the social hypocrisies of his day made his moralizing works insanely popular with the bourgeois audience for which he designed. Today these works delight and entertain us as we compare the dramatic images frozen in time with the corruption present in our own age.
