Jacques Hnizdovsky was born in Ukraine and educated in Zagreb and Warsaw. He immigrated to the United States in 1949. Influenced by woodcut artists from Durer to Hokusai, Hnizdovsky became known for his iconic, rhythmically stylized woodcuts of plants and animals. In addition to winning numerous awards and fellowships, Jacques Hnizdofsky provided illustrations to more than a dozen books and exhibited internationally. His work is featured in prominent collections including the National Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle.
