STEVEN HEINO

Steven Heino is fascinated by off-beat industrial materials - he cuts, sands, and collages phenolic cloth (normally used in Boeing airplane interiors), paints with automotive enamel and lacquer, experiments with acid stains, and exploits polyurethene and copper. The results of this alchemy are richly-layered hybrids of iconic imagery and abstraction, of calm precision and freneticism. Throughout his career, Heino has incorporated a visual syntax into his work using icons or objects which communicate an idea through their common use; a corkscrewed line, for instance, might imply a lack of control.

Heino will be exhibiting a new Effigy from his ongoing series of sculptures exploring the human figure.  These works, life-sized and wall mounted, are made of cut interlocking sections of painted or stained wood.  The cubist- or constructivist-inspired works exploit the curves and angles of the wood to accentuate body language, imbuing the sculptures with emotional and physical weight.
