Fata Morgana Series
June 6-28, 2008
St. Louis artist Dan Gualdoni presents new paintings on panel which significantly extend the scale of his previous work. The atmospheric landscape images offer the soft, glowing surfaces usually associated with encaustic. “The paintings included in this exhibition are part of a series of works entitled Fata Morgana. The title is an allusion to an illusion. The title Fata Morgana serves as a metaphorical image to suggest ways in which painting can tell us about perception of our environment and the ways of our own self-perception.”
Dan Gualdoni received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. Recent exhibitions include venues such as the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis, Schmidt Art Center in Edwardsville, Illinois, and The Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville, New Jersey.

aer Eire Series
August 2006
The aer Eire Series is a group of paintings from 2005 which was inspired by a two and a half month Ballinglen Art Foundation residency in County Mayo. The word, aer is a variant spelling of air and Eire is the Gaelic name for Ireland. The works capture beautiful atmospheric landscapes formed by translucent layers of color. Soft hues of blue and warm soft yellows are accented by minimal representations of hills, sea, and sky. Gualdoni has been associated with the tonalist tradition through his use of color and light, yet in some areas, the images appear photographic. In each piece the artist utilizes painting and printmaking techniques to achieve the subtle details and lush surfaces.
