Alexander Gorenstein

We're sorry, Davidson Galleries no longer carries this artist's work

Alexander Gorenstein takes his cues from his work as a stage designer by creating dramatic scenarios. European architecture set amidst barren landscapes becomes a key component to many of his paintings and all involve figures – people or wooden mannequins – who populate the tableaus as actors on a stage. Dreams and fantasy are beautifully depicted, alluding to surrealists such as Magritte and De Chirico. Gorenstein’s technical prowess shows through the complexities of his handling of his subject matter. The artist’s keen sensibilities toward perspective and use of symbolism also plays a role in his new works, which range in subject from still life to domestic narrative to cityscape.
