Frostad focuses on the literal and metaphorical meaning of a point of entry. House and home hold great importance to Frostad and many of these paintings depict scenes of domesticity. But, as she states, although the thresholds of our homes might be the most important ones we routinely cross, "there are other liminal spaces in life. These are sites of transformation and transition, moments of uncertainty in between, and points at which the enigmatic becomes discernible, known. These thresholds intrigue me too as I seek to create images that combine naturalism and symbolism, that hold both personal and social relevance."
Frostad paints allegorical narratives which are inspired by her personal experiences and concerns yet are purposely open-ended for interpretation. In her work, Frostad's objective is to "present the essential elements of a story: a character or two, a sense of place and time, a moment of contact, conflict or contemplation. I hope to keep the spectrum of interpretation broad, and leave room for viewers to insert their own perceptions and experience."
Stephanie J. Frostad has exhibited with Davidson Galleries since 1995. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections. She works and resides in Montana.
