Showing in "What I See", July 2-31, 2010

“Travel readily serves as an allegory for life’s journey. Glimpsed or unseen destinations stand in for one’s fulfillment or fate. Obstacles, storms and other adversities represent the challenges one is bound to encounter on the quest. Transformation comes as often through the unexpected as in the dedicated search. While I have explored these narrative possibilities before, they strike me as particularly salient when so many of us are experiencing a change of course. Our current transitions may not entail packing a few provisions and wandering into uncertain prospects, but for some that is both literally and figuratively true.

“What is new to this body of work is the number of images with several characters. These wayfarers are an odd company, and sometimes appear navigating alone. Our times inspire gratitude for, and cultivation of, genuine connection and empathy. Whether we join forces by choice or by chance, we might look to each other for enlightenment and encouragement, support and solidarity in learning new paths, recovering our losses and discovering new resources. Self-reliance may still be prized, but we need community for the creation of meaning through our triumphs and travails.” - Stephanie Frostad, July 2010

Frostad paints allegorical narratives which are inspired by her personal experiences and concerns yet are purposely open-ended for interpretation. In her work, Frostad's objective is to "present the essential elements of a story: a character or two, a sense of place and time, a moment of contact, conflict or contemplation. I hope to keep the spectrum of interpretation broad, and leave room for viewers to insert their own perceptions and experience."
