Davidson Contemporary is pleased to present Outsourced: Donald Fels in India. Fels has been making art about trade around the world since 1990. In 2004, he traveled to India as a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar, spending seven months working with a group of sign painters to create a large series of stunning ‘hoardings’- enamel on metal panels. Until extremely recently, India cities large and small were full of bright and brilliantly painted (by hand-) advertising hoardings. Despite a time honored tradition in India of outdoor narrative painting, hoardings have been reduced to anachronisms by evolving global marketing strategies.
Alongside these large works Fels exhibits his distemper paintings on panel. Although they seem to be the formal opposites to his hoarding works - non-representational, intuitive, decidedly apolitical - these organic abstractions are entirely interrelated to Fels. He is inspired by the same emotions and visual cues - color, especially - that inform his sign works. Distemper, a casein derivative, is a traditional medium used in poster painting.
Don Fels will have a one-person exhibition at the Tacoma Art Museum in 2008. This exhibition marks the 25th anniversary of Fels’ previous solo show at Davidson.
