LITHOGRAPHS CELEBRATING THE OPERAS OF WAGNER AND BERLIOZ
Although a celebrated artist of portraiture and still life, French painter Henri de Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) became one of the greatest lithographers of the 19th century, producing over 350 lithographs. Fantin-Latour’s many works were inspired by imaginative themes and often reveal his passion for music and opera. Of his many prints, some of the most highly prized are those from the opera series illustrating the music of the composers Wagner and Berlioz. Using subtle variations of light and line Fantin-Latour created romantic designs of operatic characters and scenes. The Dresden Museum, the British Museum, and the Louvre each have excellent collections of the artist’s lithographs.
