FRITZ EICHENBERG
(American, 1901-1990)

Fritz Eichenberg was a prominent illustrator, teacher and champion of the print. After leaving Germany in 1933, he settled in New York and first gained fame for his illustrations commissioned by Random House and the Limited Editions Club. In 1956, Eichenberg became chair of the graphic arts department at the Pratt Institute, and in 1961, he founded the publication Artist’s Proof, devoted solely to the graphic arts. In 1976, Eichenberg completed The Art of the Print: Masterpieces, History, and Technique (published by Abrams), now a standard text.
