TALLMADGE DOYLE

Contemplari Natura, Tallmadge Doyle’s recent series of 21 copper plate etchings, depicts the flora and fauna of the Pacific Northwest. The species were selected to reflect the diversity of habitat and act as a record of the natural history of the region. After printing, these 21 copper plates have been installed in Ford Alumni Center at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Tallmadge Doyle received her MFA in printmaking from the University of Oregon, Eugene, OR. Doyle resides in Eugene and is an Adjunct Professor of Printmaking at the University. Her work is included in numerous public and private institutions including the Portland Art Museum, the City of Seattle Portable Works Collection, and the Cleveland Art Association Collection.

The beautiful rich, layered color prints of the artist's earlier work reference ancient scientific and alchemical equations and symbols.

December 2008 Exhibition: Celestial Menagerie

Imaginary etched constellation figures make up Tallmadge Doyle’s exhibition Celestial Menagerie. These symbolic figures are inspired by traditional celestial allegories in which humans can honor and recognize sacred animals, deities, and moral tales. They are not intended to be accurate but do carry on an age-old tradition of storytelling that started with the Babylonians and Sumerians, passed to the Egyptians and later the Greeks and Romans.
