In his second exhibition at Davidson Galleries, Shagdarjavin Chimeddorj continues his representations of horses, figures, and the Mongolian landscape in a new body of ink paintings on paper. Now fifty years old, this son of a nomad was first put on a horse before his third birthday. His father roamed the Gobi Desert a half day’s hard ride south of Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia’s capital city. The son fell in love with his father’s animals.
His painting style is varied, whether ink or oil; at times his line is soft and minimal, nine or ten lines to capture the movement of a horse; other times he uses a broader brush to define mass and shadow; in still another body of work he draws diagrammatically for a whimsical, almost cubist style of accentuated line and angle.
The famous Museum of the Horse (Musee du Cheval) in Chantilly, France has acquired 65 of his paintings for permanent display; some there consider him the world’s leading contemporary painter of horses. His works are part of the permanent collections of eight museums in Europe as well in as Korea and Mongolia. The Mongolian writing seen in some of Chimeddorj’s paintings was prohibited during the Soviet era (1921-1991) and is now being revived thanks in part to artists like Chimeddorj.
