Born and raised in Lorraine, Jacques Callot studied drawing and printmaking in Rome, Italy. He later worked under the direct patronage of the Medicis in Florence, where he established his reputation as a fine print artist with a flair for the dramatic.  Known as the Father of French etching, Callot was a master at expressing the joys, horrors, celebrations, and tragedies of 17th century Europe.  Skillfully rendered and precise in detail, Callot’s prints are some of the finest in the history of the medium.
