GEORGE ELBERT BURR
The Etched Works - A Retrospective

"Gems of purest workmanship" was the description given to the etchings of George Elbert Burr (1857-1939) in the artist's obituary in the New York Times.  Best known for his exquisite copperplate etchings of the vast desert and mountain regions of Arizona and Colorado, Burr is considered one of the finest of the early 20th century American printmakers and is without parallel in the genre of western landscape.  His prints are in a number of prominent collections including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the British Museum, and The New York Public Library. During October and November, the Antique Print Department at Davidson Galleries will present a comprehensive retrospective of Burr's etchings, featuring important works from every stage of the artist's career. A catalog of the exhibition is available upon request.
